Nella giornata del 28 Marzo la nostra scuola ha avuto il piacere di ospitare il celebre scrittore contemporaneo inglese Jonathan Coe, in questi giorni in Piemonte per il concorso letterario “Città di Moncalieri”.

Tre classi del nostro istituto, due del liceo scientifico e una del linguistico, hanno avuto l’opportunità di partecipare ad una conferenza da lui tenuta interamente in lingua inglese. Quest’ultima è stata introdotta dalla professoressa Coha, ex insegnante dell’istituto, che ha posto all’autore una serie di domande inerenti alla sua infanzia ed ai primi contatti con la scrittura. “Da bambino ero appassionato di fumetti, per cui tentai di riprodurne alcuni, sia graficamente sia riscrivendone la trama”- ha risposto Coe- “fin quando non mi sono accorto che il disegno non era il mio forte. Così mi sono dedicato solo alla scrittura”.

Più avanti si è dato spazio anche alle domande degli studenti, curiosi di scoprire sempre di più riguardo all’ ispirazione, ai soggetti dei romanzi ed al ruolo della lettura nella vita dello scrittore. “Non ho mai perso l’impulso della narrazione, ed è proprio questo che mi ha convinto a perseverare nella ricerca di case editrici che mi pubblicassero. Frequentemente il mio stile viene definito semplice, ma per me non è un insulto, anzi. Credo che un buon libro, per essere considerato tale, debba poter raggiungere più lettori possibili. I miei romanzi sono, infatti, un ritratto della società britannica: i protagonisti sono personaggi che possiedono caratteristiche provenienti dalle mie esperienze precedenti, a cui ho aggiunto un tocco ironico personale”. 

In merito al processo di creazione delle vicende, ha rivelato che la lettura di romanzi di autori minori è stata fondamentale, insieme alle riflessioni che nascono in periodi di noia. Per questo, egli ha invitato tutti i giovani ad immergersi nella lettura e interrogarsi sulle proprie esperienze, quali i viaggi e gli incontri interpersonali, che fanno nascere la curiosità.

Un ruolo importante nella sua carriera è costituito dalla musica, che rimpiange di non aver portato avanti alla ricerca del successo. Nonostante ciò, Coe si dedica a suonare jazz e musica dance con il suo gruppo musicale di amici.

In conclusione, l’incontro ha riscosso successo, dato l’approccio del relatore, estremamente ironico e alla mano con i nostri giovani studenti, che si sono dimostrati soddisfatti della particolare opportunità offerta dalla scuola, resa possibile grazie all’interessamento ed alla disponibilità della professoressa Coha e della professoressa Vota.  

On March 28, our school had the pleasure of hosting the famous English contemporary writer Jonathan Coe, in these days in Piedmont for the literary competition “City of Moncalieri”.

Three classes from our institute, two from the Scientific High School and one from the Language High School, had the opportunity to attend a lecture he gave entirely in English. The latter was introduced by Professor Coha, a former teacher of the institute, who asked the author questions related to his childhood and the first contact with writing. “As a child I was fond of comics, so I tried to reproduce some of them, both graphically and rewriting the plot”- Coe replied- “until I realized that drawing was not my strong suit. So I devoted myself only to writing”.

Later, students asked questions, curious to discover more and more about the inspirations, the subjects of the novels and the role of reading in the writer’s life. “I’ve never lost the impulse of narration, and this is what convinced me to persevere in the search for publishers that would publish me. Frequently my style is defined as simple, but in my opinion it is not an insult, indeed. I believe that a good book must be able to reach as many readers as possible, to be considered as such. My novels are, in fact, a portrait of the British society: the protagonists are characters who have characteristics coming from my previous experiences, to which I added a personal ironic touch”.

Regarding the process of creating events, he revealed that the reading of novels by minor authors was fundamental, along with reflections that arise in times of boredom. For this reason, he invites all young people to immerse themselves in reading and to question themselves on their experiences such as travels and interpersonal encounters, which arouse curiosity.

An important role in his career is represented by music, which regrets not having carried on the quest for success. Despite this, Coe is dedicated to playing jazz or dance music with his group of friends, who also have a Spotify playlist that we share here:

In conclusion, the meeting was successful, given the speaker’s approach, extremely ironic and easy-going with our young students, who were satisfied with the particular opportunity offered by the school, made possible thanks to the interest of prof. Coha and prof. Vota.
